Benton Harbor Church

Welcome to First Church of Christ, Scientist in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Our church is located at 177 Chippewa St., Benton Harbor, MI 49022. (View Map)

Within 24 years of the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866, a group of her followers was meeting in private homes in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Michigan. In 1901 regular Sunday and Wednesday services and Sunday School were held in Benton Harbor. In May of 1907 First Church of Christ, Scientist, Benton Harbor was recognized by The Mother Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass and by Michigan law. In 1913 the church purchased the former Universalist church on Pleasant Street and dedication services were held on Sunday, Sept 7, 1919.

Other students of Christian Science had formed their own Society in St. Joseph. The two congregations remained separate until the middle 1930s.

Property at our current location was purchased in 1958. By late fall of 1960, construction began on a contemporary building designed by Charles Faulkner, A.I.A. of Chicago. The dedication services were held in 1965.
