Muskegon Church

muskegon

The history of Christian Science in Muskegon began with a dramatic healing in 1884 of Dudley Tillotson, a salesman in his mid-thirties who had suffered illness most of his life and who had been told by physicians in Muskegon and nearby Grand Rapids that he had only a short life expectancy.  The healing followed Christian Science treatment by a woman who moved to Muskegon after attending classes with Mary Baker Eddy in Boston.  Mr. Tillotson and his wife, Sarah, hosted in their home the first of several classes of instruction in Christian Science held in Muskegon homes until 1898 when Christian Science Society of Muskegon was formed.  The group grew in numbers and on January 15, 1901 became First Church of Christ, Scientist, Muskegon.

Services were held in the Muskegon Woman’s Club until May 3, 1931 when the first service was held in a large new Greek-revival edifice.  This well-appointed building and its Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ were dedicated debt-free on December 10, 1950.  Church services (and the Reading Room) recently moved to its current location (June,2013).
